Of The I's first release was a free EP, originally uploaded for production tips until it suddenly started making ripples in the p2p ocean. It features the initial versions of the songs Cold, Between Being & Ego, Stopping the World, and Cathexis. The songs were all recorded in a small flat that two band members shared. All the music was composed by the band as a side project during student life. The songs arose through musical experimentation, inspiration and discussions about life, the universe, music, and consciousness.
After distributing over 15,000 copies online, the band members decided they would record a full-length album.

The first 'Balance Instars' sampler was released at the beginning of 2008, featuring early mixes of Single Units, Modern Equivalent, and Between Being & Ego. While these tracks were avaialble for streaming from many web-resources, hard copies were also produced and sold online in order to help the band pay for the final stages of mixing and mastering.

Of The I is continuing their trend of doing almost everything themselves, dedicating all of their free time to the band.
